2008 MERRY EDWARDS SAUVIGNON BLANC

91 Points
"Merry Edwards consistently makes one of the cleanest, freshest sauvignons from her Russian River Valley grapes. This vintage is filled with honeyed citrus scents, lemon curd and fresh-cut apple flavors that last. It's round enough for veal sausages roasted with apples."

"Effusively fragrant, with honeysuckle, apple blossom, peach and ripe melon flavors that are delicious, ripe and extremely mouthwatering, with an acidity that dances along the rich, creamy texture."

"This newest rendition of a perennial CGCW favorite assumes its accustomed place at the head of the pack. It displays a rewarding sense of richness beneath its engaging freshness with elements of Crenshaw melons and green figs set against tailored oak spice and complimentary herbaceousness. It confirms the notion that Sauvignon Blanc is capable of real sophistication and class, and its combination of balance and polish promises to keep it in fine shape for years to come."

Wine of the Week
"A rich sauvignon blanc that has some interesting tropical notes. Grassy, with aromas and flavors of melon, guava, lemon, vanilla and spice. Long finish."
Peg Melnik - The Press Democrat, January 6, 2010

"Aromatic citrus and peachy fruit; subtle and elegant with great depth and a long finish showing minerals and charming floral notes."

"Wow! This may be the best Sauvignon Blanc that I have covered in years. I was not alone with this thought. There were several tasters that agreed! It is a light yellow colored wine that opens with a traditional Sauvignon Blanc bouquet of mild grapefruit with a hint of lime. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, very well balanced and creamy. The flavor profile is a delicious complex blend of light lime and mild green melon with a touch of oak and mild grapefruit. It finishes dry, yet it is mouthwatering."

"At $30 (the price offered at the winery), this rich but balanced sauvignon is like no other. Fully barrel fermented, it is lush and opulent while refreshing, showing notes of honeydew melon, pear, pineapple, vanilla and a touch of orange."

"…This is the most unique Sauvignon Blanc I have had. Due to the lush acidity and supple body, this will pair terrifically with any seafood. Personally, the seafood dish picked should be very clean and possibly offer a light citrus sauce to fully compliment this wine. Wine Spectator is yet to rate the 2008, but when/if they do I am sure it will have another terrific rating. To me, this wine is a classic. It will certainly age very well for about 5-7 years due to its crafting and natural traits. I rate this wine 95 points, because it is the best white wine I have ever had."

"Next up on the Russian River wine tour of the weekend was Merry Edwards. For those not in the know, she is a legendary maker of Sauvignon Blanc and we’ve looked forward to tasting her wines since moving the the West Coast a few years back... Let me just say that this was MORE than worth the wait. As a group I’d say we walked out of there with no less than 3-4 cases of this wine which finally sold me on the varietal. I always find them to be a little too summery and fruity, but this one had all the makings of a good Sauvignon with that fruity, clean taste, but with the big backbone of a well barreled Chardonnay... An absolute winner. ."

"…over the years, there have been a few sauvignon blancs from California I've liked, but none ever came close to those made by Merry Edwards… Beginning with the 2001 vintage, her first signature sauvignon blanc, have been recognized as truly world-class and the 2005, 2006, and 2007 scored particularly well with the critics… The (2008) has not yet been reviewed by the major critics, but it confirmed my belief that sauvignon when grown from the best clone in the right soil and made in the style of the best of Loire sauvignon blanc, they can be as rich and complex as the greatest white wines in the world… I would place this as one of the top three sauvignon's produced in the world (along with Didier Dagueneau and Peter Michael) and at half to a third of the price of the best! It's not often that I recommend a wine this strongly, but I think this is one of the finest white wines I have ever tasted and deserves a place in your cellar and on your table. ."
Naples Wine News, June 2009

"The highly acclaimed Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc is no ordinary version of this popular varietal. The 2006 was ranked 37th in Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines of 2008.” James Laube of Wine Spectator wrote about the 2007, “… the greatest Sauvignon Blanc that I have ever had from anywhere.” I’m not one to argue. The 2008 model is a volcanic eruption of tropical fruit and blossoms—a masterful use of oak—no spit bucket needed."
